Call for Applications
Doctoral and Post-Doctoral Fellowships
The Hebrew University of Jerusalem in cooperation with the Petro Jacyk Program for the Study of Modern Ukrainian History and Society announces a new grant program - the Ludmer Program - for the research and study of Jewish history and culture in Galicia and Bukovina. The Ludmer Program is for Ukrainian doctoral students and post-doctoral scholars who are studying the history and culture of the Jews of Galicia and Bukovina.
While the program is open to scholars working on various aspects of these topics, preference will be given to research projects related to Jewish history and culture in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Ukrainian citizens who are graduates of universities or other institutions of higher education in Ukraine are eligible to apply.
The Ludmer Program provides scholarships for: doctoral students at Ukrainian universities, Ukrainian students wishing to undertake doctoral studies at the Hebrew University, and Ukrainian post-doctoral researchers wishing to conduct research at the Hebrew University.
A) Grants for Doctoral Studies in Ukraine
Grants for writing a dissertation on a topic related to Jewish history and culture in Galicia and Bukovina for doctoral students pursuing their degree in Ukraine (renewable for up to four years). Students awarded the grant will have two academic advisers: one Ukrainian, the second Israeli. This grant covers a stipend for the period of study in Ukraine, tuition costs for a year of study at the Hebrew University, and annual summer workshops at the Hebrew University.
Support for a year's study at the Hebrew University includes the costs of travel between Ukraine and Israel, housing in university dormitories, and a living stipend.
To apply, please submit:
- 1) A detailed CV, including a list of any publications;
- 2) An academic writing sample (published work, college or university thesis, undergraduate seminar paper, or similar work);
- 3) An official university transcript of courses attended as well as grades received;
- 4) A research proposal (up to 5 pages) with a description of a prospective thesis topic;
- 5) One letter of recommendation from the student's academic adviser in Ukraine which should be sent separately.
Yearly renewal of the grant is contingent upon the approval of academic progress reports.
Finalists will be contacted for an interview in Lviv in the summer of 2010.

B) Doctoral Scholarships for Studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem
This grant is for students from Ukraine who wish to undertake doctoral studies at the Hebrew University on a topic related to the Jewish history and culture in Galicia and Bukovina.
The grant covers the costs of travel between Israel and Ukraine, tuition at the Hebrew University, housing in university dormitories, and a stipend to cover living expenses.
Finalists will be contacted for an interview in Lviv in the summer of 2010. Please note that the Israeli academic year runs from mid-October till late June.
To apply, please submit:
- 1) A detailed CV, including a list of any publications;
- 2) An academic writing sample (published work, college or university thesis, undergraduate seminar paper, or similar work);
- 3) An official university transcript including courses attended and grades received;
- 4) A research proposal (up to 5 pages) detailing a prospective topic for the doctoral thesis;
- 5) Letters of recommendation from two scholars which should be sent separately;
- 6) Applicants without previous experience of study at an educational institution where English is the language of instruction must submit official TOEFL scores.
Annual renewal of the grant is contingent upon the candidate's academic progress.

C) Post-Doctoral Fellowships at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
The program is open graduates of universities and other institutions of higher education in Ukraine who have received or will receive their PhD by the date of application.
The grant covers the costs of travel between Ukraine and Israel, housing in Hebrew University dormitories, and a living stipend. Fellows will be expected to take part in courses and other related academic programs at the Hebrew University. The post-doctoral grant may be renewed for one additional year.
To apply, please submit:
- 1) A detailed CV, including a list of any academic publications;
- 2) An academic writing sample (published article or chapter from dissertation);
- 3) An official university transcript of courses attended and grades received;
- 4) A research proposal (up to 5 pages), including a detailed research project and research objectives;
- 5) Letters of recommendation from two researchers (preferably at least one of them not from Ukraine).
Renewal of the grant is contingent upon an academic progress report submitted by the researcher.
Finalists will be contacted for an interview in Lviv in the summer of 2010. Please note that the Israeli academic year begins in mid-October and ends in late June and post-doctoral fellows are expected to be in residence in Israel for the entire.
